An up and down week saw the Bottineau Stars win their first district contest and fall in consecutive days to Dunseith and Bishop Ryan.
First on Tuesday night the Stars traveled to take on Drake-Anamoose in a District 11 battle.
Bottineau got on top early as they led 14-2 after the first quarter. The Raiders fell behind more and more as the game went on and Bottineau wound up routing the Raiders 59-36 on their court.
The Stars shot 79 times in the contest as they forced 30 turnovers and committed only 17.
Leading Bottineau was senior Katryna Hahn, who had 15 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Also productive for the Stars were sophomore Stephanie Brenden (12 points, three steals) and senior McKenzie Jensen (11 points, seven rebounds). Junior Courtney Gallagher led the Stars with nine rebounds and fellow junior Danielle McDonald had a team-best six steals in the win.
After that strong game, the Stars looked to roll on as they hosted Dunseith last Friday night.
However, a bad start against the Dragons led to a 45-30 loss to the district rivals. The Stars scored only nine first-half points (only two in the second quarter) and trailed 25-9 at halftime. They out scored the Dragons 21-20 in the second half, but couldn’t gain enough ground to earn the win.
There weren’t any Bottineau players in double figures in the game. They were led by McDonald’s seven points and six rebounds.
The Stars’ weekend did not get any easier to swallow as they went to play the state’s top team in Bishop Ryan on Saturday afternoon in Minot.
The Lions poured on the points all outing, scoring more than 20 in all quarters except the fourth, including a 31-point first quarter. The Stars offense was unable to get going and they fell 98-27 to the Lions.
Hannah Stewart finished with 26 for the Lions, who had five players in double figures, including Gabbie Bohl, who was limited due to injury.
Bottineau was led by Gallagher’s seven points.
The week dropped the Stars to 3-8 overall on the season and 1-2 in District 11 play.
This week the Stars play a pair of girls/boys doubleheaders beginning at 6 p.m. tonight as they host Rugby. The Stars then play at 6 p.m. in Velva on Friday.
