With a valiant fourth-quarter effort the Westhope-Newburg girl’s basketball team earned their first win of the season last Friday in a 50-47 bout with Sawyer.

It was also the opening district game for the Sioux, who scored 18 points in the final quarter to earn the victory.

Westhope led 23-15 at halftime, but watched their lead get erased after a 20-point third quarter from the Flashes.

However, a resilient Sioux team, led by seniors Bailey Tofteland (18 points) and Hadlee Schell (11 points) came back to down the Flashes.

Sawyer’s McKenzi Faul led all scorers with 19 points in the losing effort.

The win snapped a seven game losing streak that began from the get go for the Sioux, now 1-7.

Next up for Westhope-Newburg  is a game against a tough Velva squad. The Sioux also played Dunseith last night, but scores and stats were unavailable by press time.
