It was a rough opener for the Westhope-Newburg girl’s basketball team as they lost both of their games in the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot this past weekend.

The Sioux fell to Midway-Minto 54-39 in the season opener on Friday, and then were bested 58-47 by Park River-Fordville-Lankin on Saturday to start the season 0-2.

The Sioux fell behind early to Midway-Minto on Friday afternoon as the Mustangs held Westhope-Newburg to 15 first half points.

Sioux senior Hadlee Schell led all scorers with 19 points. Rachel Olson had 15 to lead the Mustangs.
Other contributors for the Sioux included sophomores Lauren Mach (seven points) and Molly Lodoen (five points).

Things went a little better for the Sioux in Saturday’s 58-47 loss to PRFL.

Westhope-Newburg hung with the Flyers as they were tied after the first period, and trailed by only four at halftime.

However, the Flyers were too much for the Sioux and 30 second-half points to earn the victory.
Senior Bailey Tofteland was the Sioux’s top performer with 12 points in the game. Also playing well offensively were seniors Jade Teske (nine points), Schell (eight points) and the sophomore Mach (eight points).

Morgan Porter had 14 to lead the Flyers.
The 0-2 Sioux will search for their first win at 5:45 p.m. tonight as they play the first game of a boy’s/girl’s doubleheader against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in Westhope.
