Sioux split to open season

A tight loss to St. John and a blowout win over Glenburn gave the Westhope-Newburg Sioux with a 1-1 record in the season’s first week of play.
The Sioux kicked off their season on the road as they traveled to take on the Woodchucks of St. John.
Both squads squared off evenly in the first half, with the Sioux gaining a one basket edge 23-21 at halftime.
However, in the second half the Woodchucks took control of the game, sliding past the Sioux in the third quarter and extending the lead in the fourth in route to a 55-45 win.
Westhope-Newburg was led by junior Hunter Braaten who had a team-best 25 points and also added 10 rebounds.
Leading the Sioux in rebounds was junior Ethan Miller. The six-foot, five inch Miller grabbed 14 rebound and also added nine points in the loss. Also in double digits in rebounding was senior Karlie Hancock, who had 11.
Despite Monday’s loss the Sioux took care of business against rival Glenburn on Friday evening with a 70-48 win in Westhope.
The Sioux came out in a blaze scoring 28 first-quarter points and opening up a 20-point lead. While the Sioux slowed down offensively the rest of the way, the defense kept up the intensity and it led to a 22-point win.
Braaten again had a strong outing as he scored 20 points, grabbed eight boards and dished out six assists.
Also scoring in double figures for the Sioux were Jon Sivertson (13) and Karlie Hancock (12). Senior Logan Hermes also played solidly for the Sioux as he grabbed eight rebounds and put in seven points in the big win.
The 1-1 Sioux play next at 7:15 p.m. tonight at Kenmare. Following Tuesday’s game with Kenmare the Sioux will take part in the Velva Invitational beginning on Dec. 13.
