An 18 point loss in Glendive, Mont., to Dawson Community College dropped the Dakota College at Bottineau women’s basketball team to 3-6 last Wednesday.

The Ladyjacks hung with the Buccaneers to begin the game as they trailed by only five points at halftime. However, the Buccaneers defense held DCB to 20 second-half points in route to a 68-50 victory.

“We certainly didn’t come back from the break very sharp.  I thought we struggled all night getting much accomplished offensively,” stated Ladyjacks head coach Wayne Johnson. “While some of that can be attributed to the break, most of that was because the Buccaneers just took us out of our game. I thought they were the aggressors and controlled the tempo of the game.”

The Ladyjacks were out rebounded by Dawson 50-36 and the Buccaneers forced 22 turnovers, while committing only 11 in the win.

“Defensively we had trouble with their quickness, allowing too much penetration and too many offensive rebounds,” Johnson stated. “They dominated the hustle stats as we were a minus 15 on the offensive boards and a minus 11 in the turnover battle.”

DCB was led in scoring by sophomore Shakira Walker, who had 18 points. Also in double figures for the Ladyjacks were sophomores Josie Degagne and Jackie Miller with 11 points each.

Miller also led the Ladyjacks with six rebounds and four assists.

“We are still struggling to find our roles and our overall game,” Johnson stated. “I do have confidence in our team potential. We need to pick up our aggressiveness and be ready for two tough opponents coming up before the semester break.”

DCB plays next this weekend at the Lane Johnson Classic in Bismarck. They will play Dec. 7 against Jamestown JV and Dec. 8 against Williston State.

“Both teams will be strong opponents so it will be interesting to see how we handle the tough stretch we are going through,” Johnson stated.
