It was a tale of two completely different games for the Lumberjack hockey team of Dakota College at Bottineau this past weekend as they hosted North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) club team.
The bad end of the two games against NDSU came on Friday as the Bison handed the Jacks their third straight loss in a 11-2 rout.
DCB fell behind early allowing five first-period goals and falling behind 5-0.
Starting goaltender Dylan Snyder was pulled for former Bottineau Brave Cody Brooks. The freshman Brooks came in and stopped 24-of-30 shots.
Nick Huffman scored a goal and dished out five helpers in the win for NDSU. Also strong for the Bison were Blake Aahkus (two goals, two assists), Tyler Groth (two gaols, three assists) and Mason Fussy (two goals). Goaltender Alex Cimchowksi had 25 saves in 27 opportunities.
DCB’s two goals were both scored in the third period. One came from freshman Spencer Archer on an unassisted marker at 17:02. The other was the third of the year at home for freshman and former Bottineau stand out Logan Millican. Zach McDonald assisted on the goal, which was shorthanded.
“It was two different games. On Friday everything that could go wrong did. The bottom line is we did not come out ready to play. Then we got into a hole and it went bad to worse.” stated Jacks Head Coach Travis Rybchinski.
Things changed completely for the Jacks in Saturday’s series finale against the Bison as DCB completed a less than 24-hour turnaround with a 9-5 victory Saturday afternoon in the Lumberdome.
The Jacks jumped to an early lead as captain Seth Serhienko scored on the power play, and sophomore Cole Reisenauer scored to give the Jacks a 2-1 first-period lead. Assists on the Serhienko score were credited to Reisenauer and Millican. McDonald assisted on the Reisenauer goal.
DCB extended their lead in the second period when Reisenauer picked up his second goal of the game. Assists came from Evan Alexius and McDonald.
At 10:05, a little more than a minute later, the Jacks went up 4-1 as Reed Loucks scored his first goal of the season. Helpers came from freshman Tyler Elshaug and Archer.
The Bison rallied to score a goal at 4:56 in the second, but DCB responded with four third-period goals to keep their four-goal lead intact and take an 8-5 win, their first of the season.
Scoring in the third for the Jacks were: Robin Danielsson, Archer, Serhienko and Millican. Assists for the Jacks came from: Serhienko, Millican, Danielsson and two from Loucks.
Brooks got the start in net and was put to work in the win. The freshman stopped 39-of-44 shots in the win.
On the other side Jared Mol stopped 28-of-37 shots.
“Saturday we changed things up and talked about having fun at the rink. Working hard and having fun. It showed with a better effort and a win,” Rybchinski stated. “I thought Cole Reisenauer played well on Saturday and he took the team on his shoulders a couple of times and showed great leadership. Cody Brooks also made some saves when he needed too. There is a few he would want back but he made some huge saves in the second that kept the momentum our way.”
“We are going to continue to improve as a team and work hard, I hope we learned from Friday nights debacle. No matter who we are playing we cannot take nights off or it could get ugly,” Rybchinski added.
The Jacks (1-3) will now take to the road as they travel to DePere, Wis. to take on St. Norbert’s JV next Friday and Saturday. The Knights’ varsity squad has won each of the past two Division III National Championships.
