The Newburg-Westhope Eagles dropped two more matches last week, as they were swept by district opponents Velva last Monday and Drake Anamoose last Tuesday.
The losses dropped the Eagles to 5-15 overall and 2-4 in District 11 play.
First on Monday the Eagles traveled to Velva for a district showdown with the Aggies.
Newburg-Westhope kept it close in the first two sets, falling 25-23 in both sets as they played right with the Aggies.
Velva stepped it up a notch in the final set though, as they defeated the Eagles 25-6 in set three to complete the sweep.
Jaylen Newman led the Aggies with nine kills, while Katelyn Sandy added five aces, seven digs and four kills. Emma Keller had five kills, six digs and a team-best six blocks in the win.
On Tuesday the Eagles hosted Drake-Anamoose in Newburg. The Lady Raiders gave the Eagles all they had sweeping them 3-0.
Again the first two sets were close, but the Eagles had trouble closing out sets.
“It all comes down to doing those little things, and finishing the game,” Fluhrer said. “We’re really struggling right now with finishing, and just doing those little things—the covering, making your serves, the passing—we have got to get better at them to finish games.”
After playing the previous night, the Eagles appeared a bit slugglish against the Lady Raiders.
“Sometimes you can come out and you’re ready to play, and sometimes you are a little dead,” Fluhrer said. “They played last night, and sometimes playing two days in a row, you can get tired.”
“They played decent two games in a row, but we have got to be ready, because districts is hopefully three days in a row, and we have got to be ready for it,” Fluhrer added.
Fluhrer said that passing is the biggest issue with the Eagles, and that they need to remedy that moving forward.
“We have got to get better at passing, that’s our biggest thing right now,” Fluhrer said. “If we can pass, then we can set and we can hit, but it comes down to our passing right now.”
The Eagles played last night against Burke Central in a non-district matchup. Stats and scores were unavailable by press time.
The Eagles next match up is at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Newburg as the Eagles host region rival Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood.
