With only 17 seconds left in last Friday’s crazy football game with Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn (WNG) Sioux, the Langdon-Munich Cardinals’ Dalton Fetsch scored from one-yard out to give the Cardinals the final lead in what was a game to determine second place in Region 2.

After a back-and-forth shootout on a snow-covered field in Langdon between the two teams it was the quarterback Fetsch’s run that broke a 36-36 tie to give the Cardinals their fifth region victory 42-36.

The Sioux dropped to 4-2 in the region, tying with Park River-Fordville-Lankin (PRFL) at the mark for third place in Region 2.

Last Friday’s loss to Langdon began as the visiting Sioux got on the board first in the game’s opening quarter.

Sioux senior Kodie Hancock galloped 40 yards for the score to give WNG a 6-0 lead.

Colter Pritchard answered back for the Cardinals later in the quarter, as he busted out and scored from 52-yards to tie the game at six.

Pritchard would put the Cardinals up 14-6 early in the second quarter as he rattled off a 75-yard touchdown scamper, and caught the conversion pass from Fetsch.

The Sioux would draw to within two later in the second period as senior Lane Berentson hauled in a pass from Hunter Braaten from six yards out. The Sioux trailed 14-12 at that point.

Pritchard would score once more before halftime though, as she plunged in from a yard out, and then ran in the conversion as well to give Langdon a 22-12 halftime lead.

Braaten answered in the third quarter with a one-yard plunge himself, and also ran in the conversion to draw again within two, 22-20.

Early in the fourth quarter Pritchard found the end zone for the fourth time as he breezed in from 23-yards out. Fetsch ran in the conversion and the Cardinals led 30-20.

Braaten again answered for WNG as he scored from two yards out, then hit junior Ethan Miller on the conversion to draw the Sioux to 30-28.

Fetsch extended the Cardinal lead with a two-yard touchdown run, but the conversion failed and the Cardinals led 36-28 late in the fourth.

That’s when the Sioux came up big and senior Karlie Hancock bulled into the end zone for a two-yard score. After a successful Braaten conversion run the Sioux and Cardinals were deadlocked, but there was enough time for the Cardinals to try and score once more.

That’s when Fetsch’s second touchdown gave the Cardinals second place in the region, and pushed the Sioux to, at best, third.

Braaten led the offensive charge for the Sioux with 76 yards rushing on 19 carries. He also threw an unusual 26 times and completed 14 of them for 207 yards.

Kodie Hanock was the Sioux’s leading receiver with five catches for 93 yards. He also rushed eight times for 45 yards.

Braaten was also the team leader on defense with 12 tackles, four asssists and an interception.

WNG’s overall record was evened to 4-4 on the season, and their 4-2 region record is tied with PRFL for third place in Region 2, and sit one game ahead of the Harvey Hornets, who are at 3-3.

At 7 p.m. on Friday in Westhope, the Sioux will host PRFL for what will determine the third and fourth seeds in the region. It is senior night for the Sioux.

Notes:
Braaten leads the team in tackles (75), assists (36), tackles for a loss (seven) and interceptions (three). Miller leads the Sioux in sacks with 2.5.

Braaten also leads the Sioux’s offense with 609 yards rushing on 100 attempts and nine touchdowns. Throwing too, as the junior quarterback is 48-for-98 on the season for 706 yards and seven touchdowns, with only four interceptions.

Braaten’s leading target are the Hancock brothers. Kodie has 11 catches for 186 yards and two scores, while Karlie has 12 catches for 141 yards and one score. Kodie also has a 528 yards on 76 carries and six touchdowns.
