Sioux march past Monarchs, earn third straight region win

Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn’s football team continued their dominate play with a 46-16 blowout victory over Region 2 opponent Midway-Minto in Glenburn last Friday.

The 30-point victory was the third straight for the Sioux, 4-3 overall and 4-1 in Region 2 play.

The Sioux jumped out to an early lead as junior quarterback Hunter Braaten ran in a touchdown from five yards out to give WNG a 6-0 lead.

Midway-Minto then scored on a Nicholas Schmitz run, and after a successful two-point conversion gave the Monarchs their only lead of the game 8-6.

The Sioux scored once more before the end of the first quarter on a four-yard Kodie Hancock run to take a 12-8 lead.

After that the scoring belonged to the Sioux as they scored 34 unanswered points from the second to the fourth quarter to take a 46-8 lead.

Kodie Hancock scored three more times, twice on runs of 19 and 33 yards, and once on a 30-yard pass from Braaten.

Also scoring for the Sioux was Kodie’s brother Karlie Hancock as he hauled in a 10-yard pass from Braaten.

Calder Solloway closed out the scoring for WNG when he ran in a score from 13 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Schmitz did add a 74-yard run for the Monarchs late in the fourth quarter against the Sioux’s second-team defense.

The Sioux were coming off a big 20-12 win over undefeated Harvey last Friday. Midway-Minto dropped to 0-5, 0-5 in the region after the loss.

The Sioux travel on the road this week as they play at 7 p.m., on Friday in Langdon for another Region 2 matchup.

The Langdon Cardinals are 6-1 overall and 4-1 in region play. Their only loss is to undefeated Larimore.
