Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn won a big game last Friday night as they toppled the Harvey Hornets in Harvey 20-12.

It was the third region win for the Sioux and the first region loss for the Hornets, which ties the two teams at 3-1 in the region standings.

Both teams were deadlocked after one quarter, but the Sioux broke through in the second quarter after a 10-yard touchdown scamper by junior quarterback Hunter Braaten.

Braaten then hit Ethan Miller for the conversion to put the Sioux up 8-0.

Braaten was the Sioux’s leading rusher with 96 yards on 17 carries.

The Hornets struck back in the third quarter when Mark Nyhus plunged in from a yard out. After the failed two-point conversion, the Sioux held on to an 8-6 lead.

However, the Sioux struck in the third quarter as well, in what wound up being the game-winning score. Braaten hooked up with senior receiver Lane Berentson from 29 yards out to take a 14-6 lead.
Braaten finished with 92 yards on 8-of-13 completions in the win.

Senior back Karlie Hancock scored from three yards out in the fourth quarter to solidify the Sioux lead at 20-6.

Hancock finished with 42 yards rushing in the game.

The Hornets would add one more score in the fourth quarter on a five-yard Koby Houchin run, but the Sioux held on for a 20-12 region victory.
But despite the scoring, it was the Sioux’s defense that led the way in the game.

WNG had a sack and 12 tackles for a loss in the win. Devin Korynta also recovered a Hornets fumble.

The defense was led by Braaten, who had 14 tackles including four for a loss.

Also strong was Korynta with nine tackles and two for a loss.

Ethan Miller had the lone sack for the Sioux.
The win pushed the Sioux into the tie with the Hornets, and they trail region leaders Larimore, who is a perfect 4-0 in the region and 5-0 overall.
The Sioux are 3-3 overall, their lone region loss was to Larimore.

WNG continues their region season with a game at home (in Glenburn) at 7 p.m., next Friday against Midway-Minto.
