The Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks dropped to 0-3 after they were routed 57-7 when they hosted the Iowa Central Tritons last Saturday.
The Jacks looked good to open the game as their defense stopped the Tritons on each of their first three offensive possessions.
However, the Jacks offense struggled throughout the contest. The Tritons pinned the Jacks inside the five and recorded a safety on the Jacks first offensive possession.
The second offensive possession for the Jacks ended with an interception thrown by Jacks quarterback Kanavis Stewart.
The Jacks scored on the ensuing possession as Malcolm Hillard, who entered the game to replace Stewart at quarterback, scored from two yards out.
The scoring play was set up by a big 60-yard pitch and catch from Hillard to wide out Tyias Huck. Huck was a little disappointed he didn’t score on the bomb.
“I was sniffing the end zone so bad, and I didn’t even know where I was,” Huck said. “I kind of just lost track and got up after and realized I was at the two. I probably should have scored. It was kind of my fault.”
The following kick off after the touchdown was returned all the way by the Triton’s Keagan Parks. The Tritons scored twice more in the first half to take a 30-7 halftime lead.
In the second half it was all Tritons as they were able to rumble up and down the field and scored 27 more points in the second half.
Huck was happy with the team’s resiliency, despite the daunting task at hand.
“We played as a team, we had a lot of guys that weren’t quitting, a lot of guys that wanted to play,” Huck said. “Everybody was putting in the effort, but it just comes down to x’s and o’s and who wants it more I guess.”
He understood that the game would be an uphill battle, and was impressed with Iowa Central’s team.
“They’re a good big team, they came ready to play, they have the numbers, they have the size,” Huck said. “It is kind of like David and Goliath with us every week, but we need to come out here, find it in our hearts to go out and get a win and beat bigger guys.”
Huck was returning from injury in the game and had two catches for 80 yards.
“We had a couple quarterbacks in and out, and we were moving the ball,” Huck said. “We just need to come out here and do what we can. I didn’t even play last week, I had a broken bone in my back, so it was nice to come back and get a couple catches, and play with the guys again.”
This was the Jacks third consecutive loss. They most recently lost in a tight game 22-14 to Concordia JV Sunday, Sept. 9 in Moorhead, Minn.
The Jacks scored on their first drive, but struggled the rest of the way turning the ball over four times on fumbles.
“We fumbled six times and lost four and had a couple of costly penalties that took away a touchdown and a couple nice runs,” stated Jacks head coach Tim Pfeifer. “The defense was put in some bad situations because of all the turnovers and played well except for a couple drives we could not get off the field.”
The Jacks have a bye this upcoming week, and play their next game on Sept. 29 at the North Dakota State College of Science.
