Newburg-Westhope drops five matches during road trip

The Newburg-Westhope Eagles fell to 3-11 on the season after a 1-5 week with a loss to Rolla on Tuesday and a 1-4 finish at the Glenburn Invite on Saturday.

First on Tuesday the Eagles were swept 3-0 by the Rolla Lady Bulldogs in Rolla.

The Lady Bulldogs cruised in set one winning 25-12. Rolla followed that with back-to-back 25-17 wins to take the match.

Miranda Leas had 11 kills to pace the Bulldogs in the win. Mary Jo Guilbert added 10 kills and three aces for Rolla in the win.

The Eagles then traveled on the road once more to the Glenburn Invite on Saturday.

In pool play the Eagles began with a 2-0 loss to Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood. The Mavericks pounced early on the Eagles with a 25-14 win in set one. In set two it was the Mavericks again getting the upperhand, which led to a 25-12 win.

Newburg-Westhope then fell in a close match against Velva 2-0. The Aggies took a one set lead after a 25-17 victory. The Eagles fought back in a close second set, but ultimately fell 25-22.

The Eagles then ran into a buzz saw in eventual tournament champion Kenmare. Kenmare won 25-12 and 25-15 to sweep the Eagles in the final pool play match.

The Eagles advanced on into silver division tournament play on the day. Their first match was against Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU). The Eagles played their best match of the day with a 2-0 sweep of the Titans.

Newburg-Westhope won set one 25-20, and then upped their game to win 25-12 in set two.

However, the Eagles momentum would not last long as they were defeated by Sawyer in the silver division title game 2-0.

The Flashes won 25-18 in game one, but the Eagles fought back in second set, yet fell 25-24.
The Eagles play only once in the upcoming week as they will host Dunseith at 7 p.m., Thursday in Newburg.
