The Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks volleyball team opened their season this past Wednesday as they traveled to Bismarck to take on the Bismarck State College Mystics.
The Ladyjacks led early in the first set, but could not stop a Mystics rally that led BSC to a 25-18 win. In the second set it was all Mystics with in a 25-17 win. The final set was a barn burner as both teams traded points throughout. However, the Mystics pulled away 30-28 to sweep the Ladyjacks and improve to 5-0 on the season.
“We dropped the match in three straight sets, but the final outcome does not reflect our overall play,” stated Ladyjacks head coach Corey Fehringer. “Looking at it from a coaching perspective we actually let BSC off the hook in the first and third sets as we held the lead majority of play.”
“Make no mistake about it, BSC is a talented team with a deep bench but have to feel good with the way we played on the road out of the gates,’ Fehringer added.
Sophomore Jodryn Sondrol had seven kills to lead all Ladyjacks in that department. Freshman setter Ashleigh Aufforth, a Bottineau native, had 21 set-assists in the loss. Fehringer said he expects her to improve as the season progresses.
“Defensively the team did a tremendous job from top to bottom as the strongest point of our game was digging, and passing,” Fehringer said. “We will get back in the gym to make corrections and begin preparation for our first home match on Sept. 5. Our main goal is to get better everyday and the DCB volleyball team accomplished that mission tonight.”
The Ladyjacks open at home at 7 p.m. tomorrow against Lake Region State College. Following that, DCB goes on a six match road trip.
