The Newburg-Westhope Eagles split two home matches this week as they opened their regular season in Westhope and Newburg respectively.

First on Tuesday in Westhope the Eagles fell in three tight games to St. John. On Thursday the Eagles swept the Surrey Mustangs, exacting revenge from a loss to the Mustangs last weekend at the Bottineau early bird tournament.

In Tuesday’s match against St. John the Eagles fell just short in game one as the Woodchucks won 26-24. In the next two games it was again the Woodchucks who took the advantage winning 25-19 in games two and three.

Senior Becca Christensen played solidly for the Eagles. She had 11 digs and three kills in the loss. Bailey Tofteland, also a senior, had a team-high five kills. Sophomore Molly Lodoen had 12 set-assists in the loss.

The Eagles bounced back on Thursday when they hosted their first game in Newburg this season, by sweeping the Surrey Mustangs.

Newburg-Westhope found their rhythm winning games one and two 25-19 and 25-20 respectively. By the third game they really hit their stride in a 25-13 win. As a team the Eagles had 18 aces, with Lodoen leading the way with five. Lodoen also had 10 set-assists and nine digs.

Sophomore Lauren Mach had a stellar match for the Eagles as she had team-highs in kills (five) and digs (13). Senior Hadlee Schell had 11 digs, while Tofteland finished with five kills.

The win exacted a bit of revenge for the Eagles, as they lost to the Mustangs on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Bottineau early bird tournament in the ninth place game.

The Eagles are now 2-6 on the season, and will next hit the road this week for matches at Rolla tonight and a tournament in Glenburn on Saturday.
