After opening the season 0-2 the Region 2 opener was a bit kinder to the Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn Sioux this past Friday.
The Sioux had their region opener on the road at Hatton-Northwood, and came away with their first win 36-14. The Thunder were little match for the Sioux running game which was stellar from the get go. The Sioux scored all of their 36 points in the first half.
The scoring started with a 32 yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Hunter Braaten. Braaten also ran in the conversion to make it an 8-0 lead. Later in the first Braaten again ran in a score, this time from 40 yards out. A successful conversion pass from Braaten to Shane Getchell made it 16-0 Sioux.
Senior Karlie Hancock got in the mix on the next drive, plunging in from a yard out. A missed extra point put the Sioux up 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior back Calder Solloway broke away on a 55-yard pass play from Braaten in the second quarter for the Sioux’s fourth score. A Braaten conversion run, and the Sioux were up 30-0. Braaten concluded the Sioux scoring by running in his third touchdown of the game from one yard out late in the second quarter, making it 36-0 Sioux at halftime.
The Sioux failed to score in the second half, and the defense did cede two touchdowns through the air in each quarter.
In the third, Thunder quarterback Jacob Pladson hit Jace Pederson for a 45-yard score. In fourth it was again Pladson, this time tossing a 25-yard pass to Cory Lloyd to bring the Thunder within 22 at 36-14.
That’s how it would stay though as the Sioux completed their first win and first region win of the season.
WNG is 1-2 on the year, and 1-0 in Region 2 play. The Sioux will host the Larimore Polar Bears at 7 p.m. in Glenburn this Friday, Sept. 7.
