The Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn Sioux fell to 0-2 as they lost their second straight game on Saturday to Stanley-Powers Lake.
The Sioux fought an uphill battle all day against the defending Class A state champs, falling 40-6, but head coach Tom Nesvold felt that the team played better than in the 21-8 loss to Bottineau last Tuesday.
“You don’t get any better if you don’t play anybody decent,” Nesvold said. “I felt like we played a lot more physical today on three days rest.”
“We played better on the line, we moved some guys around and we got some positive yards,” Nesvold said. “Defensively we shut some things down.”
The Blue Jays got on the board first as Kale Enget hauled in a deflected pass from Sam Footh in the first quarter. Sioux corner Lane Berenston broke the route on the play, deflected the ball, which then fell into Enget’s awaiting hands in the endzone.
It was one of many plays that Nesvold said just didn’t go the Sioux’s way in the game.
“The one touchdown we had the ball picked off and it goes through his hands, and not even through his hands, pops up and lays there for them,” Nesvold said. “We’re close, we needed some good things to happen and they did, we just didn’t get the breaks in a timely manner.”
Stanley’s Abe Roehrich scored later in the half on a 14-yard scamper to put the Blue Jays up 14-0.
The Sioux answered back in the second quarter after junior quarterback Hunter Braaten ran in a 17-yard score to pull the Sioux within a score.
The Blue Jays scored once more before the half on a 63-yard pass play from Footh to Seth Meyer. After a blocked extra point Stanley led 20-6 at the half.
The second half was all Blue Jays as they scored 20 more points to claim a 40-6 win. Scoring touchdowns for Stanley was Roehrich (second of the day) Footh on a seven-yard run and a 58 pass and catch from Footh to Enget.
Roehrich finished with 15 carries for 126 yards to lead all rushers in the win.
After the game Nesvold said that there are a few things to clean up, but that despite the loss, things look to be all right.
“We have to clean up the snap count and a few things,” Nesvold said. “We didn’t have much of the holding and those things, so that’s good, of course that might be because we aren’t blocking.”
“We’ll review the tape, make the necessary changes and roll from there,” Nesvold added.
The Sioux fall to 0-2 with the loss. They will travel to play Hatton-Northwood in their opening region game next week. The Thunder are 0-1 following a season-opening 34-21 loss to Mayville-Portland.
