With harvest in full swing in Bottineau County, local ag producers are seeing positive yields in a number of crops.

“The crops that have been planted in the county are hard red winter wheat, hard red spring wheat, durum, wheat, barley, sunflowers, canola, field peas, flax, corn and soybeans,” said James Kapp, county agent for Bottineau County. “For the most part, the wheat and barley has been running very well considering the drought that we have encountered. As for the corn and sunflowers, I project the yield will be lower from last year.”

Kapp added that the weather played a part in the yields of this year’s crops.

“The weather this year had a major effect on the crops this year. Early in the year we were blessed with a lot of moisture and midway through the growing season the moisture just stopped, causing many of the crops to stress and start maturing.”

The most positive aspect of the 2012 harvest season is the market value of the crops.

“The markets are looking very good and should continue to stay strong throughout the remainder of the year,” Kapp said.
