James Kapp has accepted a position with NDSU’s Extension Office in Bottineau County and will serve as its county agent. Kapp replaces Tim Semler who retired as Bottineau County’s extension agent this past spring.

Kapp is originally from Steele, N.D., and is a 2008 graduate of Kidder County High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in ag business from North Dakota State University, earning his degree in 2011.

After graduating from NDSU, Kapp accepted a position with the Mock Farm in Steele as a herdsman and planner for the 7,000 acre farm with 450 head of cattle.

This summer, Kapp accepted his position with NDSU Extension Office because of his interest in farming, education and the state’s youth.

“I grew up in 4-H and I always thought the extension office was interesting,” Kapp said. “In this job, you get to be with the youth, you get to help the youth and you get be involved in the ag industry.”

Kapp stated that he is also pleased to be in Bottineau.

“I like the staff here. You have a group of people here working together to get something done, instead of just one person like it would be in different counties in the state,” he said. “And, Bottineau County is very large and I know they have an excellent 4-H program going already where one can just build off of it and go from there.”

Kapp added that his goals as the county agent in Bottineau County is to start new programs, better the ones in place and get more youth involved.

“I feel they (the youth) are the future of the agriculture industry right,’ Kapp said. “If they are not involved, where are they going to go from there? I want to get involved there and increase on that.”

Kapp said that he is excited to start his position with the extension office.

“I’m really happy to be here and I am looking forward to the future here in Bottineau County,” he said.
