Luke Melgaard is the most recent agent at Bottineau’s Nodak Mutual Insurance Company, and he replaces former agent, Jim Miller, who has made the decision to retire from the insurance company.

Melgaard was born and raised in Kenmare and is a graduate of Kenmare High School. He attended the University of Mary and North Dakota State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and accounting.

For five years, Melgaard and his wife, Breanna, lived in New York City where he was a real estate agent in Manhattan.

In 2011, Melagaard was offered a position with Nodak Mutual in Bottineau, and he and his wife decided to make the move back to North Dakota.

“This job opportunity came up and we couldn’t pass it up,” Melgaard said. “Our oldest child will be starting school this fall, and with the job offer, and our son getting close to school age, we thought the timing was perfect. So, we made the decision to move back and it has worked out great.”

For the past year, Melgaard has worked in the Nodak Mutual office in Bottineau as a separate agent to Miller; however, in order to take over the office after Miller retired he had to reach certain goals to take over the books, which Melgaard completed successfully.

With Miller retired, Melgaard is now the sole agent for Bottineau’s Nodak Mutual office, which is an insurance company that offers home, auto, life and annuities, health, business, farm and ranch, and crop insurances.

Melgaard stated that although Nodak Mutual doesn’t specialize in one unique area in insurance policies, the company is known for its farm and ranch policy, along with it auto and home insurance.

“We have really good farm and ranch rates,” he said. “And, our auto and home rates are really competitive. We are a strong company and I enjoy working for the company.”

Luke and Breanna have two children, Jayden, six years old, and Braxton who is nine months old.

The couple enjoys being with family, spending time at Lake Metigoshe and golfing.

The Melgaard family is also pleased to be in the local community.

“We really enjoy it here. It’s a great place to raise a family, and everyone has been really welcoming to us since we first arrived here,” Melgaard said. “We also have relatives around here and we knew a few people before we moved here. So, we are excited to be here and really like the city of Bottineau.”

Melgaard added that he owes a great deal of gratitude to a number of people who have lent him a hand in getting him to the position he now holds.

“I want to give a special thanks to Jim Miller for all his help, advice and guidance he has given me this past year,” Melgaard said. “And, a special thanks to Jennifer Christianson, the customer service representative in the office, for all the hard work she has done for me.

“I have also met most of the customers, but I haven’t met them all, but I look forward to meeting them,” Melgaard added. “I encourage them to stop in even if it’s just to say hello so we can meet.”

Individuals, interested in doing business with Melgaard, can meet him at Bottineau’s Nodak Mutual Insurance Company, which is located on Highway 5 at 104 W 11th Street, Suite 4. The business is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments can also be set-up for evenings and weekends.
