Turtle Mountain Veterinary Service has hired a new general practitioner, Dr. Carla Sharp. Sharp graduated from Iowa State in May, and began working at Turtle Mountain Veterinary Service on May 21.
Sharp grew up on a small grain farm near Joliette, N.D. She grew up around animals and enjoyed riding horses and partaking in her local 4-H.
After graduating from high school, Sharp attended North Dakota State University where she obtained a degree in Microbiology. She then attended Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she graduated in 2012.
Sharp chose to pursue a career as a veterinarian because she wanted to learn about both agriculture and medicine.
“I tracked production animal medicine in vet school, mostly beef cattle.” Sharp said. “I really like agriculture. I’m really enjoying meeting and getting to know clients and working with their pets, horses and livestock.”
Sharp is very excited to be working at the Turtle Mountain Veterinary Service. She says that Dr. Jill Franks, the owner of the clinic, is a great teacher and mentor. Sharp first visited the Turtle Mountain clinic in 2009 with interest in working there. She contacted Dr. Franks again in December of 2011 to see if she could still get the job. This is Sharp’s first job as a veterinarian, aside from interning in Cavalier, N.D.
Sharp feels blessed to be back in rural North Dakota.
“I love Bottineau.” Sharp said. “It’s a friendly place, and it seems like such a thriving and self-sufficient community, and the area is absolutely beautiful.”
