Winners abound at 2012 fair

Both awards and contests touting cash prizes abound this past weekend at the 123rd Bottineau County Fair.
First in the 23rd annual Amateur Night on Thursday at the fair grounds, 16 competitors sang for the crowd and the judges, eight in the junior division and eight in the senior division.
The top three in the junior division were: 1. Hallie Khalifa of Westhope, 2. Alexis Wyman of Newburg and 3. Jacie Parisien of Belcourt. In the senior division it was Morgan Yeroshack of Souris, Manitoba earning the top spot. Runner-up honors went to Michael McManus, and in third place was Heidi and Kelsey Artz.
Third place winners took home a $100 prize, second got $250 and first place winners receieved $400.
All of the top winners were invited to open for Johnny Holm on Saturday.
Other competitors in the junior division were: Brianna Helbling, Megan Wyman, the Eidmann sisters, Veronica Eidmann and McKenzie Macrellois.
Others competing in the senior division included: Sonja Tinjum, Gary Fulsebakke, Katja Bartsch of Bottineau, Roger and Krystal Heth of Antler.
Cattle awards
Cattle showman, volunteers and other 4-H members received numerous awards at the fair this past weekend.
Winners of a $30 Herdsman Award were: Rylee Lodoen, Kelsey Bowers, Morgan Costa and Levi Kippen.
The $40 Furgeson Award was awarded to Nick Costa. The Furgeson Award is given to a person that promotes poultry or a different small animal each year. It is given to the overall grand champion in that category to help with expenses.
A $200 major scholarship, called the Bloomberg scholarship in honor of Matt Bloomberg was awarded to Molly Lodoen. The money is to help defray costs at the state fair, and the winner must qualify for state as well as meet a number of guidelines in showmanship.
Finally, four volunteers were selected to receive Paul and Harriette Heidbreder Memorial jackets. The 2012 recipients of those were: Fred Tyler, David Larson, David Bernstein and Verdean Kveum.
