On April 21, 2013, nineteen seniors and two teachers from the Bottineau Public School will have a great opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. and New York City. They will witness government in action first hand, and learn about their responsibilities as citizens of American democracy through the Close Up Foundation, which is the nation’s premier civic education organization.

Close Up provides exciting and unique government study programs.

"The Close Up’s programs have a curriculum designed to introduce students to the history, politics and culture of our nation through a hands-on learning environment," said Mary Grosgebauer, co participant educator of Bottineau High School Close Up with Gale Wondrasek-Lane. "Under Close Up guidance, the students complete a demanding but fun series of modules and learn that their voices matter in solving today’s issues. Students dialogue with lawmakers, media and fellow students, using our nation’s capital as a living classroom."

Close Up offers students an unparalleled, non-partisan learning experience. In addition to the program provided for the students, Close Up has a professional development program for teachers, which allows them the opportunity to share ideas with other educators from across the country. Teachers attend seminars and workshops that provide insight to enhance their classroom curricula. "Students and teachers alike return to their community inspired to engage as citizens and to help make the world a better place," Grosgebauer said.

The program cost $2,500 for each student, which includes professional instruction, travel expenses, meals and lodging.

"We are dedicated to making this valuable education program available to all senior students who wish to take part, regardless of their financial ability and hope the community will helps us in this effort by contributing any amount you can," Grosgebauer said. "Donations are tax deductible, as the Close Up Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501©3 organization. Please make checks payable to Bottineau High School Close Up and mail to the Bottineau Public School with attention to Gale Wondrasek-Lane and Mary Grosgebauer. For your records, the Close Up Federal Employer identification number is 23-7122882. Your donation will be an investment in our community’s future by helping students and teachers participate in this educational experience, and will be greatly appreciated."

BHS’s Close Up organization will also be having events this summer to raise money.
