The 2012 race season is underway after the opening race on May 20, and the biggest change for most fans, racers and pit crew members was the new start time of 4 p.m.

Jeff Smith, track manager of Thunder Mountain Speedway, said that was to help drivers from longer distances.

“As far as the reasoning on the times being moved up, that was done to accommodate racers that travel. We are hoping that it will bring more cars from the Grand Forks and Jamestown areas,” Smith stated.

Other than the new time, the racing is as exciting as ever according to Smith. He said the mainstays of the track for fans, the bike give away, candy toss and trophy give away will still be done this year.

A strong showing of 30 cars at the Steven Peck Memorial race made for even more excitement for the year to come.

“I think everyone was excited to get the race season going, we had a lot of new cars for the first race, and that was due to the start times being moved up,” Smith stated. “We had a good showing of new drivers from the Langdon and Devils Lake areas and the return of some of our Jamestown drivers, all due to the start times. I think its going to make for exciting racing this season.”

The schedule for the remaining race season is as follows:

  •  Regular race night, Sunday, June 3
  •  Kid’s Night, Sunday June 24
  •  Mechanic’s Race, Sunday July 8
  •  Powder Puff Race, Sunday July 22
  •  Third annual Harvest Classic, Sunday Aug. 5
  •  Season Championship, Sunday Aug. 19
  •  80’s and newer Demolition Derby, Saturday, Sept. 8
