Rugby Golf Club played host to the Region 4 boy’s golf tournament last Thursday afternoon, but it wasn’t a very friendly host.
The course was set up to challenge the golfers and mother nature kicked in some above average temperatures as well.
“It was really nice, but it got really hot,” said Bottineau freshman Luke Amsbaugh. “The pin locations were hard.”
Bottineau finished in ninth place, 32 strokes behind third place Harvey-Wells County, which was the cut off to make it to the state meet.
“We could have shot way better than we did, everyone could have,” Amsbaugh said.
HWC narrowly edged out Velva by a single stroke to advance. Also advancing to state were Bishop Ryan with a second place 362 and host Rugby with the top score of 351. Westhope-Newburg came in seventh place with a total of 393.
The Sioux had no new qualifiers for state. Hunter Braaten and Trevor Hulse had previously qualified.
Bottineau had a team total of 398 using scores from junior Zack Monson (85), Amsbaugh (99), Taylor Parisien (106) and Brock Hiltner (108).
Amsbaugh thought that he could have shot better, especially on the greens.
“I didn’t shoot as well as I thought I could,” Amsbaugh said. “It was mainly my putting (giving me trouble).”
Darren Young from Benson County was the top finisher winning a playoff against Randy Marchus as the pair of seniors each shot 77.
Young was also named Senior Athlete of the Year. Gary Myhre from Rugby was named Coach of the Year.
Monson’s 85 finished him in fifth place individually, which qualified him for state, but Monson already had qualified in Velva two weeks prior, shooting a 77.
The junior will compete at the Class B State Tournament on May 29-30 at Oxbow Golf Course.
A number of the region teams also played at the Westhope-Newburg Invitational earlier in the week on Tuesday at Westhope Golf Club.
At that meet, the host prevailed as the Sioux shot a team total of 330 to scorch through the competition. Northern Lights came in second with a 347. Bottineau took fifth with a 371.
Lane Berentson shot a team-best 77 to propel the Sioux to victory. Braaten’s 83, Dylan Stratton’s 84 and Hulse’s 86 were also used to make the Sioux score of 330.
Also golfing on the day for Westhope-Newburg were Chase Conway (89), Jon Sivertson (97), Ben Sharkey (108), Tyler Rubbert (108) and Calvin Henry (123).
Bottineau shot six golfers on the day. Monson took fourth place individually with an 80 and was the top scorer for the Braves.
Also scoring for Bottineau were Amsbaugh (87), Philip Neubauer (92), Jesse Klebe (112), Kameron Mooney (116) and Alex Bristol (120).
