When picking out a high school play, it’s typical of the students wanting to perform every play on the planet. Well, this year, Kari Jostad, director of the Bottineau High School Drama Club, made every Bottineau High School’s thespians’ dreams come true when she decided to direct, “Just Another High School Play”.
“The kids love to do comedy,” Jostad said. “And, there are a lot of different plays represented in this show. So, the kids get a good variety of parts to work with.”
The play is about a high school drama teacher who abandons his students on opening night because the kids haven’t been showing up for rehearsals. With the director gone, the students are left to figure out what to do.
With complete chaos ruling the backstage, the assistant director and stage manager step up to the plate when they find a box of scripts and decide to hand them out to the cast.
What follows is one of the best comical plays ever written with a cast of 20 Bottineau high school students performing a variety of plays in the most hilarious way. From a Shakespeare puppet show, to rapping out Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”, to a whole lot more, the cast of this play will keep the audience in stitches through laughter.
Chloe Smith and Jared Munson hold the leads in this BHS’s production of “Just Another High School Play”, along with the support of 16 others students, all who get to play a number of parts.
Bryan Starchman is the mastermind behind the script of this play, and he is a natural talent in writing screenplays. As a college student he was awarded the UCLA playwriting award for his satire of fraternity life. In his career, he has written over a dozen plays in great success, with his plays being produced over 900 times in 48 states and five countries.
“Just Another High School Play” will be performed at the Holwell Auditorium May 17-19 (Thursday through Saturday of this week). The curtain will go up at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday evening, while Friday’s showing will start at 7:30 p.m.
If you are looking to laugh yourself silly, while at the same time smiling from your heart, the Holwell Auditorium is the place to be this weekend when BHS’s drama club brings the stage alive with this wonderful comedy.
