The Dakota College at Bottineau braved the cold and wind last Thursday to play a doubleheader against Minot State JV at Tommy Turtle Park.
Things did not go as anticipated for the Ladyjacks who lost their fourth and fifth straight contests in back-to-back five-inning contests won by the Beavers. The Beavers took care of the Ladyjacks 14-0 and 15-0 respectively.
In game one the Beavers capitalized on eight DCB errors, and scored nine times in the opening frame to take home a 14-0, five-inning victory.
The Jacks only mustered two hits, and both came from lead off hitter Destiny Kaus. Former Ladyjack Keysha Jansen was the winning pitcher, and Amanda Schmidt took the loss for DCB.
“We really gave the Beavers way too many opportunities early in this game,” stated DCB Head Coach Wayne Johnson. “They are a great hitting team and we knew we couldn’t give them more than three outs in an inning.”
Game two went just as poorly as the Beavers scored five times in the first, six in the second and four in the fifth to get their fourth win over DCB this season in a 15-0 blow out.
Jansen again got the win for the Beavers, while Jillian Hole took the loss for the Ladyjacks.
“We kind of felt this day was a game of putting our team back together after losing our center field Whitley Naismith to a broken ankle on Tuesday,” Johnson stated.
Naismith batted second in the lineup and played outfield. AliceAnn Sloan and Courtney Hart split time taking her place, while Emily Olafson took over at first base for the removed Sloan.
DCB had five hits in the loss, with Jess Mehling getting two of them, as she had a double and a single. Kaus added another hit in the game as well.
The Ladyjacks comitted only four errors in the loss, but Johnson was still a little disappointed with the defensive effort.
“We again gave a great hitting team too many extra outs.” Johnson stated. “Some were recorded as errors, some were balls we didn’t play that probably should have been played.”
However, Johnson was happy the bats came around, at least a little.
“We swung the bats a bit better and gave ourselves a couple of good chances to score, but came up short,” Johnson stated.
DCB fell to 7-13 following the pair of losses.
DCB had six games scheduled for last weekend at home against Dawson Community College, but no results were available.
The Ladyjacks are next scheduled to take on North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton on Wednesday and Thursday.
