Temperatures below freezing and winds in excess of 20 miles per hour made for tough golfing conditions as Bottineau hosted the boys tournament at the Bottineau Country Club.
The golfers from Bottineau had trouble with the conditions on their home course as they finished in sixth place in the shortened tournament.
The top four nine-hole scores for the Braves added to a team total of 200. A score of 172 by Northern Lights won the competition.
Bishop Ryan finished at 177 for second place, with Our Redeemers, Rugby and Velva lagging behind with scores of 193, 196 and 197 respectively.
The top scores of the day came from Northern Lights’ Nick Myhre and Bishop Ryan’s Kalan Elm, who each shot one over par 37’s.
Myhre then beat Elm in a one-hole playoff to capture medalist honors.
The top finisher for Bottineau was junior Taylor Parisien, who finished with a nine-hole total of 45.
Also carding scoring totals for the Braves were freshmen Luke Amsbaugh and Kameron Mooney. The pair shot 49 and 55 respectively. Junior and number-one golfer for Bottineau, Zack Monson, finished with a 51.
Also golfing for Bottineau were Philip Neubauer (55), Alex Bristol (61), Christian St. Claire (70) and Jesse Heil (71).
For the four freshman of Bristol, Mooney, St. Claire and Heil it was their first taste of a varsity meet this season.
Mooney turned out to be the biggest bright spot for the Braves.
“It was pretty fun just to get out there and play a little bit,” Mooney said. “I thought I did pretty good, but there is a lot of improving that I know I can do.”
Mooney was excited about his score, but was really there just for the experience.
“It was good because it was a great experience most of all,” Mooney said. “I didn’t even really care about the score until the end. Then it was like ‘oh, I got a 55, cool.’”
Mooney was also a contributor on junior varsity and varsity basketball team’s this past winter for BHS, he see’s a lot of similarities between golf and basketball.
“It is about the same, it’s all about going for that hole and putting it in there,” Mooney said. “It’s a good time.”
Mooney will be moving to Arizona following the school year, so he is happy to learn the game here, so he can show off his skills at a place where he can play year-round.
“I hope it will help me become more polished, so when I get down there I will know some stuff and do good,” Mooney said.
The Braves were supposed to have a meet on Friday in Rolla, but it was postponed due to rain showers.
Bottineau’s next meet is today at Harvey-Fessenden.
Girls take fourth at Rugby tournament
The Bottineau girls golf team finished in fourth place in a weather-shortened meet in Rugby last Thursday.
A team total of 242 had Bottineau 45 strokes behind winner Garrison.
Rugby took second with a score of 205.

Sophomore Bailey Neubauer clocked in with a 59 and freshman Jacie Ceglowski 60.
