The city of Bottineau has a new coin shop which is owned and operated by a very unique and kindhearted man.

Russ Hornbacher is the owner of Hornbacher’s Coins Plus, which is located on Seventh Street East at the former Vinje Barber Shop.

Hornbacher Coins Plus is a full service coin shop which also deals in a variety of other collectibles.

“As a collector, the two things I like best is metal and paper,” Hornbacher said. “By metal I mean coins, tokens, fobs and advertising pieces. With paper I like stocks, checks, currency and bonds. I also deal in post cards, books and stereoscope cards. I like all these types of things because they are small and historical, and I love history and collecting.”

Hornbacher Coins Plus deals in all types of coins and currency throughout the world. Hornbacher conducts appraisals in his coin shop, along with buying and selling coinage and monetary paper. He will also search for coins and cash individuals are attempting to find.

Hornbacher has been in the coin business for over 48 years and enjoys sharing his love for coins with other people.

“I enjoy this type of work and coins have been good to me,” Hornbacher said. “It’s a fun job and I get the opportunity to spend time with people and talk with them about coins and life in general.”

Hornbacher was born in Harvey, N.D., and is a graduate of Anamoose High School. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and history from Jamestown College, and a Masters Degree in elementary education from the Northern University of Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.

He recently moved to Bottineau for what he calls a rather out of the ordinary reason.

“I’m a diabetic and I lost my leg. When I started looking for place to live I chose Bottineau because it’s a small town that is flat because when I first came I was still in a wheelchair,” Hornbacher said. “I also enjoy Bottineau. It is a nice town with some really nice people.

“I also chose Bottineau because I like Canadian coins and Bottineau is the perfect place to access Canadian coins because of its location and the people in the area dealing with these types of coins,” Hornbacher added.

Individuals, interested in doing business with Coins Plus, can visit his business or call him at (701) 871-0143 to schedule an appointment.
