Bombers knock out Sioux at regions

Westhope-Newburg’s boy’s basketball season ended last Monday as the Sioux were defeated 63-47 in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament by eventual region champions, the Berthold Bombers.

The fourth-seed from District 11 the Sioux fell behind the top seed Bombers out of District 12 early on, and were unable to recover.

Berthold took an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and while it hovered at about that point throughout, the Sioux could not gain any ground.

Sophomore Hunter Braaten led the Sioux with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Kodie Hancock, a junior, finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in the loss. Hancock was later named to the All-Region team at the conclusion of the tournament.

Alex Bloms led the Bombers with 20 points.
The Sioux finished the season with a 10-13 record overall. They defeated both Dunseith and Towner-Granville-Upham to reach the Region 6 tournament.

Westhope-Newburg will lose senior’s Wyatt Kitzman, Tyler Rubbert, Trevor Hulse and Josh Lesmann.

They will return leading scorers Kodie Hancock (16.9 points, 9.6 rebounds per game) and Hunter Braaten (15.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists per game).
