The Westhope-Newburg girls basketball team’s season took a turn for the positive this past week as they picked up two wins and narrowly lost a third game.

“Since the beginning of the season we really had to learn how to work together, because we had never really played as a team,” senior guard Kylee Conway said. “Just seeing us run the floor and be in sync is exciting to see, because it is a big improvement for us.”

The Sioux ladies began the week with a 43-34 win over Rolette-Wolford in Newburg on Tuesday.

Junior Bailey Tofteland led the Sioux past the Comets with 17 points, as the Sioux held the lead throughout the contest.

Hadlee Schell added eight and Molly Lodoen had seven as the Sioux triumphed for only the sixth time this season.

Rae Ann Beaver had 11 to lead the Comets.
Despite a strong effort a four-to-three advantage in the extra period gave the Surrey Mustangs a 51-50 win over the Sioux on Thursday in Westhope.

Despite trailing by six at halftime the Sioux came back strong in the second half taking a three-point lead after three quarters and holding on to a tie to end regulation.

But Leah Parizek and Kayle Schiele combined for 29 points for the Mustangs and muscled them past the Sioux.

Tofteland again led the Sioux scoring both a season and career-high 22 points. Conway added 11 and freshman Lauren Mach had nine in the narrow loss.
Conway was pleased with her role on the team this season.

“It was fun to have them look up at me, and know they respect me and had to learn from me,” Conway said.

The Sioux closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 51-46 win over nearby Glenburn in Westhope.
The Sioux led by as much as 14 after three quarters, but let the Panthers back into it in the fourth quarter.

However, the Sioux held off the Glenburn surge in route to their seventh victory of the season.

Junior Hadlee Schell had herself quite a night finishing with 18 points. Mach added nine and Lodoen and junior Jade Teske each had seven.

Natalie Stivers and Halle Schumann each had 11 to lead the Panthers.

The game was the final home game for Conway, and she reflected on what she will miss.

“Definitely my teammates,” Conway said. “Just being with them everyday.”

Westhope-Newburg finished the regular season with a record of 7-13. They head into the District 11 tournament as the seventh seed and will take on second-seeded Towner-Granville-Upham to begin the tournament on Friday in Towner.

Conway provided some insight into what the Sioux will need to upset the Titans and anyone else they might play in the tournament.

“Definitely our boxing out and we have to score consistently, not just here and there,” Conway said about what they need to improve.

The top four finishers in the district tournament will advance to the Region 6 tournament beginning Monday, March 4 in Minot.
