An offensive explosion, including a hat trick from Karlee McCloud, gave the Bottineau 19U hockey team a 9-1 win last Saturday over Watford City.
“It was a pretty sloppy game to be honest,” said Bottineau Captain Morgan Klebe. “But we pulled a win thanks to Karlee McCloud and her hat trick, that was pretty nice.”
“She is the one that really got us going with that second goal, after that it seemed like we picked everything up,” Klebe added.
McCloud scored her first goal in the second period, which gave Bottineau a 2-1 lead, but ended up being the eventual game winner. Tiffany Schuster assisted on the goal.
Less than two minutes later it was McCloud again who struck, this time on a pass from Erin Severson, to make it 3-1.
Severson scored a little over a minute later on an unassisted back hand goal.
Ashley Blue would add two of her hat trick of goals at the end of the second and beginning of the third periods. Both were unassisted.
Klebe, the captain, scored a goal on passes from Blue and Bailey Neubauer at 6:40 in the fourth quarter to make it 7-1, Bottineau.
McCloud scored her third and final goal, and Natalie Bahr scored on a pass from Blue to round out the scoring for Bottineau in the eight-goal win.
Also with an assist in the game was Alyssa Acheson on Blue’s opening goal in the first period.
Goaltender Jacie Ceglowski stopped 27-of-28 shots in the win.
Klebe eyes the goal, like most teams, of taking a state title, and she thinks, with their team and their coach, they can do it.
“I think part of it is our coach. We’ve really been working hard for him,” Klebe said. “We’ve been really buckling down these past couple of practices to finish out the state tournament well.”
“We’re looking to take first this year,” Klebe added.
Bottineau currently is 14-3 and on a four-game winning streak, but they have a tough road ahead, as they have to play a couple of the teams they lost to earlier in the season.
“A couple big games are coming up. We play Mandan High, and they beat us earlier, but I think we have an advantage, because we’ve been working so hard,” Klebe said. “Crosby is another one we have to beat. Last time we lost to them in overtime in Crosby.”
“We need to bring our ‘A’ game definitely,” Klebe added.
That starts with the game against Mandan High at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 in Mandan.
Bottineau has this weekend off.
