The Westhope-Newburg Sioux girls basketball team took a step back from their winning ways this past week as they were defeated in three games by big margins.

The Sioux’s skid began with a loss to Dunseith on Tuesday 58-42. It continued with a 61-27 loss to Velva on Friday and finished with a 63-34 loss to Our Redeemer’s on Saturday.

First on Tuesday the Sioux lost their first District 12 game to the Dunseith Ladydragons.

Tanika Poitra had 16 points to lead the Dragons past the Sioux. The Sioux fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to catch up as the Dragons built their lead.

Lauren Mach was the top performer for the Sioux as she finished with a double-double, 13 points and 13 rebounds. Mach also added two steals and two blocks in the losing effort.

Also in the mix for the Sioux were Amber Hall (nine points), Kylee Conway (three points, 12 rebounds and Bailey Tofteland (six points, eight rebounds, two blocks).

Following the loss to the Dragons the Sioux hit the road only to run into the upstart Velva Aggies, who pummeled the Sioux 61-27.

Velva jumped out to a 15-point lead after one quarter and did not slow down.

Jaylen Newman had a fantastic game for the Aggies scoring a game-high 24 points.

Hadlee Schell scored seven points to lead the Sioux in her first game back after missing several games with an injury.

Mach also had seven points as the Sioux dropped their second straight district game.

The Sioux’s final defeat of the week came at the hands of the Our Redeemer’s Knights.

Again the Sioux fell behind early and the Knights cruised to a 29-point win.

The full court press caused several problems for the Sioux who turned the ball over 28 times, including 19 times in the first half.

Three Knights scored in double figures led by Ashley Koppinger, who had 15 points.

The Sioux were led by the junior Tofteland who was the only Westhope-Newburg player to score in double figures with 11 points. Mach and fellow freshman Molly Lodoen added eight as the Sioux lost their third straight and second straight on the road.

The three losses dropped the Sioux to 3-8 on the season and ended a three-game win streak.

Westhope-Newburg were on the road again last night at Des Lacs-Burlington, but results and stats were unavailable by press time.

The Sioux will return home for a 7:15 p.m. game against Towner-Granville-Upham in Westhope on Thursday.
