The Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks appeared to be back on track as a weekend sweep of the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Bison earned them three straight victories.
“It was our best hockey of the year so far for a weekend. We got contributions from all four lines and played well in at times,” stated Head Coach Travis Rybchinski.
The wins did not come easy for the Jacks though, it took overtime to get a 6-5 win over the Bison on Friday.
Sophomore Wade Haight got the unassisted game-winner at 3:57 in the overtime, but it was another sophomore that made a lot of noise for DCB.
Will Kinsman had a spectacular game scoring twice and dishing out two assists in the first and second periods to help DCB get the win.
Sophomore Erick Paiement also scored twice in the win. Kirby Braybrook scored the opening goal for Bottineau.
Troy Chandler was stout in net for the Jacks as he stopped 38 Bison shots on the afternoon.
Saturday DCB won their third straight and eighth game of the year in a 4-2 victory over the Bison.
The Jacks socred twice in the first to take a 2-1 lead. Goals were scored by Ryan Schaner and Haight. Assisting on the Schaner goal were Kinsman and captain Scotty Walters.
After neither team scored in the second, DCB’s Bernden Cawston slid the eventual game-winner past Bison goaltender Alex Cimochowski. Nick Sutton assisted.
Seth Serhienko added an empty net goal with 15 seconds left to seal the victory for the Jacks. Sutton assisted on that goal as well.
Chandler stopped 27-of-29 shots in route to his third straight win between the pipes.
“We need good efforts and we got it. Some guys are really nicked up right now and playing through injuries,” Rybchinski said. “They are making sacrifices for the team and that is what you need at this time of the year.”
The Jacks improved to 8-13-1 on the season with the sweep.
The Jacks will host Williston State for the third of the best-of-five series at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Lumberdome. The Jacks won the first match due to forfeit, and the Tetons took the Jacks 3-0 in the rematch on Jan. 10.
