Sioux get first win of the season over Stanley

The Newburg-Westhope Sioux earned their first victory of the season last Friday night and broke a five game losing streak in the process.

The Sioux topped the Stanley Blue Jays 50-38 in game one of a girls/boys double header.

Freshman Lauren Mach exploded on offense for the Sioux scoring 23 points and grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds.

Also effective on offense was junior Bailey Tofteland who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Jade Teske had 10 points and seven rebounds and senior Kylee Conway rounded out the scorers for the Sioux with four points and seven boards.
The win pushed the Sioux to 1-5.

The Sioux lost that fifth game earlier in the week when they traveled to Rolla and played the Lady Bulldogs.

The Sioux jumped out to a quick start, leading 14-9 after the first quarter. After that though it was all Rolla, who went on to win 61-22.

Mary Jo Guilbert had 18 points to lead all scorers and three Bulldogs finished in double digits.

Mach also led the Sioux in this game with six points. Also scoring were Tofteland (five points), Teske (four points), Becca Christenson (three points, Conway (two points) and Maddy Lodoen (two points).

The Sioux played last night at home against Kenmare, but scores were unavailable by press time.

Newburg-Westhope will also host Berthold at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
