The Westhope-Newburg Sioux dropped to 4-7 after a rough week which included losses to Bishop Ryan, Rugby and Stanley.
First on Monday evening the Sioux hosted a fired up Bishop Ryan Lions squad.
Despite holding a lead after one quarter the Sioux fell behind in the second and third quarters, when the Lions made a run.
“We had an eight minute stretch in the second and third quarters where nothing was happening for us offensively,” said Sioux Head Coach Bob Beaudrie. “However, I thought offensively we had a lot of patience, which was kind of our goal going into this week.”
The Sioux defense was another matter. Beaudrie was happy with the defensive effort of his team.
“Defensively I thought we did all right, but a couple breakdowns, gave a kid a couple looks at threes, which he knocked down, but other than that, it was one of the better defensive efforts of the year,” Beaudrie said.
Kodie Hancock had a monster game for the Sioux finishing with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Hunter Braaten had seven points, eight boards and three assists in the narrow loss.
“Other than a couple errant passes that we made in the first half I thought we played well,” Beaudrie said. “We made a good run. When we got down 15, 16 we could have easily said ‘we’re done,’ but they fought back.”
“Not only did they fight back, but they did it the right way,” Beaudrie added. “They’d drive in and find guys, not drive in and throw up garbage.”
Overall Beaudrie was happy with his team’s performance despite the outcome.
“We did a lot of good things, the passing is still a little suspect, which we talked about,” Beaudrie said. “But we played well and Minot Ryan always has a good team.”
Following the loss to the Lions the Sioux met up with the Rugby Panthers on Thursday night in Westhope.
The Sioux ran into a buzz saw as the undefeated Panthers sprinted past the Sioux 78-54.
Jayden Welk had 19 points for the Panthers as they improved to 9-0.
The Sioux were led by Braaten who had a team-high 19 points and also added six rebounds.
Hancock earned his third straight double-double scoring 14 points and nabbing 10 boards. It was also his sixth double-double in 10 games this season.
The final Sioux loss of the week came in game two of a boys/girls double header in Stanley. The Blue Jays snuck past the Sioux 64-61 thanks to a fourth quarter comeback.
The Sioux led each of the first three quarters, but in the final quarter were unable to hold on for victory.
Three Sioux scored in double figures in the loss: Braaten (17), Hancock (16) and Jon Sivertson (13).
Hancock also grabbed 11 rebounds for his fourth straight and seventh overall double-double of the season.
Braaten also added seven boards and three assists.
The Sioux will travel to Towner to take on Towner-Granville-Upham at 7:15 p.m. tonight. At 7:15 p.m on Thursday they will host Bottineau in Westhope.
