The Ladyjacks celebrated Christmas a bit early, on Dec. 12 to be exact as they headed into the holidays with a 92-58 demolishing of the Turtle Mountain Community College Mikinocks.
It was Dakota College at Bottineau’s (DCB) third straight win over the Mikinocks this season, and improved their season record to an impressive 10-5.
This is a game ahead of where they were last season, a season where they made it to the Region XIII title game for only the third time in school history.
“We have made nice progress in the first part of our season but have much to get accomplished after the break,” stated DCB Head Coach Wayne Johnson. “We are pleased with a 10-5 record but realize there is much work to be done.”
Despite a couple of speed bumps in the first half the Ladyjacks went into halftime with a 12-point lead. In the second half they expanded that lead with a strong inside effort and used it to get a 34-point win.
“We had a couple of five minute segments of the first half however that belonged to the Mikinocks. We saw a nice lead whittled down to 12 at halftime,” Johnson stated. “I thought our ladies came out aggressive but more under control in the second half and we played much better.”
Five Ladyjacks finished in double figures led by Jackie Miller who had 16. Also in double figures were Megan Green (14), Kayla Nelsen (13), Jordyn Sondrol (12) and Shakira Walker (10). Green also had 11 rebounds. The effort from Green was her third consecutive double-double.
Freshman Andrea Chatfield led DCB on the boards with 12. The Ladyjacks out rebounded the Mikinocks 59-40.
“We did a good job on the boards and also at getting to the foul line,” Johnson stated. “We had some nice individual efforts with five players in double figures and all 10 players scoring.”
In the win the Ladyjacks forced 30 Mikinock turnovers, while committing only 11 of their own.
The win was their third straight and sixth of their last seven.
DCB will open the second part of their season after semester break with a trip to the MinnDak Classic in Thief River Falls, Minn. on Jan. 6-7.
