An 0-2 showing at the Shootout on the Prairie was not the start that the Westhope-Newburg girl’s basketball team was hoping for.
But, after losses to Fordville-Lankin-Park River (50-35) on Friday and Midway-Minto (53-29) on Saturday, that is exactly how the season did begin.
The opening weekend began with the Sioux falling behind in the first game of the Shootout on the Prairie. The Flyers jumped out to a 26-12 halftime lead; they would not look back. They finished out the Sioux in a 50-35 victory.
Junior post Hadlee Schell was the lone bright spot for the Sioux. She had 11 points in the loss. Maddy and Molly Lodoen combined for 11 points.
Following their loss to the Flyers on Friday the Sioux hoped to turn things around on Saturday against Midway-Minto. However, the Monarchs were coming off of a 60-23 thrashing of Kenmare on Friday evening.
The Monarchs did not hold back on the Sioux either, opening a 27-11 halftime lead and ending with a 53-29 victory.
Again Schell was the only Sioux player in double figures; she had 10 points.
The 0-2 Sioux lady’s team will start tonight with the first game of a boy’s-girl’s double header in Mohall. The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season after beating Divide County in overtime last Friday, but then losing 42-18 to Towner-Granville-Upham last Saturday.
