In order to be successful the Bottineau Stars knew they would have to use their defense this season to do it.

They did just that, as the Stingy Stars defense created a season-opening 43-41 win over Dickinson Trinity last Friday at the Shootout on the Prairie in Minot.

The Stars, who trailed after three quarters, 32-29, forced several turnovers in the final quarter, and scored just enough to squeak past the Titans 43-41.

Bottineau forced 27 Titan turnovers in the victory. Sophomore Danielle McDonald and senior Heidi Artz has 12 points each in the win.

The Grinsteinner’s Nikki and Katelyn combined for 25 points for the Titans in the loss.

However, the Stars weekend would not close with a sweep at the shootout. Bottineau could not take care of business against a tough Thompson squad, who did sweep their weekend opponents, including a 55-34 stomp over Bottineau.

The Stars trailed by four after one quarter, but in a snap of the fingers were down 16 by halftime.
Unable to climb out of the hole in the second half, the Stars fell for the first time of the season.

McDonald again led the Stars, this time with seven points. Freshman Steph Brenden, and seniors Whitney Page and Artz all had six points a piece.

Four players for Thompson combined for 52 of their 55 points and were all in double figures. They were led by Shannon Galegher, who had 18 points.

Following the tourney split to start the season 1-1, the Stars will take a week off before continuing their season  at 5:30 p.m., Monday Dec. 19 against Our Redeemers. The game will be game one of a girls/boy’s double header in Bottineau.
