It was an overall good week for the Dakota College at Bottineau women’s basketball team even though the Ladyjacks split contests during the week.
The Ladyjacks began the week with an 83-59 dismantling of Turtle Mountain Community College on Tuesday, and lost a close overtime game 89-84 to Minot Air Force Base on Saturday.
The DCB ladyjacks forced 27 turnovers and out rebounded Turtle Mountain Community College 51-34 in route to an 83-59 in Belcourt last Tuesday.
“Good game in that we came away with the victory, got plenty of playing time for everyone, and had everyone in the scoring column,” stated DCB Head Coach Wayne Johnson. “I thought we had some stretches where we did some good things and overall I was pleased with the results.”
Freshman Jackie Miller and Maria Espindola led the Ladyjacks with 14 points a piece, as the Ladyjacks shot 41 percent in the win.
Megan Green also was solid scoring nine points and leading the Ladyjacks with nine boards. Josie Degagne (13) and Jordyn Sondrol (12) also scored in double figures in the win.
“We rebounded well and shot free throws pretty well. We won the turnover battle but I thought we were a bit careless with the basketball at times,” Johnson stated. “Overall it was a good night for the Ladyjacks.”
On Saturday late game heroics from Sondrol forced overtime, but the Ladyjacks were out dueled by Minot Air Force Base in the extra period 89-84.
“This was a tough loss but also a very good learning experience for us. I thought our ladies battled hard and made a number of huge plays down the stretch,” Johnson stated. “Unfortunately the Magic made a couple more.”
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early lead and held a 45-41 lead at halftime, but the back and forth affair, which saw nine lead changes and eight ties, went the way of the Lady Magic in the second half and overtime periods.
Johnson said the defensive effort for the Ladyjacks was the reason for the result.
“Our defensive play was probably my biggest disappointment of the day,” Johnson stated. “We have made great strides defensively however we have taken some steps backwards in our last two efforts.”
Miller burst out with 28 points for the Ladyjacks. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Sondrol had a spectacular game as well for DCB. The freshman scored 12 points and led the Ladyjacks with 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Johnson thinks that the game was a good learning experience for the Ladyjacks.
“The Lady Magic have a nice team and it was a very good test to see where we are at and what needs to be improved,” Johnson stated. “Those are the type of games we need.”
The 1-1 week sets the Ladyjacks season record to 7-5.
DCB will play at the Lane Johnson Classic hosted by Bismarck State beginning on Friday, and then will host TMCC in a rematch at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Woodshed.
