Sioux win season opener

The Westhope-Newburg Sioux boy’s basketball team opened their season on a strong note last Friday evening in Glenburn.

The Sioux opened the season on the road against the Glenburn Panthers and survived a fourth quarter run to win 83-72.

The Sioux hopped out to a big lead in the first quarter out scoring the Panther 22-5 in the first quarter and taking a 25-point lead into half time.

The Panthers made a run by scoring 54 second-half points, but ultimately fell short.

Five Sioux players scored in double figures, as they shot 48 percent from the field as a team in the win.
Senior Wyatt Kitzman led the charge for Westhope-Newburg scoring 20 points. Also in double figures were starters juniors Jon Sivertson (17), Kodie Hancock (12) and sophomores Ethan Miller (16) and Hunter Braaten (15).

Sivertson hit 4-of-5 three pointers in the win and Braaten led the Sioux with eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Sioux will travel to St. John at 7 p.m. tonight and will then play Thursday against Our Redeemer’s as part of the Velva Invitational.
