The Dakota College at Bottineau made the long trip to Calgary, Alberta to try and get revenge on the Calgary Edge, but instead were swept by the highly talented team.
“We played well enough to at least split on the weekend but took some untimely penalties,” stated DCB coach Travis Rybchinski. “We need to get over that hump and it comes from our leaders. They need to take the team on their back and get it done.”
The Jacks lost 2-1 on Friday night in the opener in Calgary.
The Jacks fell behind early as the Edge notched two markers in the first period.
The first was an unassisted power play goal from Jeremy McNeil at 5:59. McNeil scored his second goal of the game less than five minutes later at 9:28.
The Jacks managed to get on the board in the third period when Cole Reisenauer took a pass from Will Kinsman.
Troy Chandler stopped 26-of-28 Calgary shots, and the Jacks out shot the Edge 31-28, but were upended.
“Our inability to score on the power play was our Achilles Heel this weekend,” Rybchinski stated. “We really have to get on the same page on the power play and get some production. We were 1-for-19 on the weekend.”
Calgary net minder Kyle Baumgarden had 30 saves.
The Jacks again fell behind early on Saturday as the Edge scored in the first period on a James Robinson goal. The Jacks answered back in the second period as they got goals from Kinsman and Reisenauer to take a 2-1 lead. Kinsman’s goal was assisted by Reisenauer. Reisenauer was assisted by Chris Evans.
The Edge then scored three third period goals one from Robinson, one from Mitch Ferguson and one from James Gosbee to get the sweep.
Gosbee also had an assist.
Chandler had 27 saves on 31 shots attempts. The Jacks again out shot the Edge 33-31, but it was not enough.
Jake Tamagi had 31 saves in the winning effort.
“I was happy with our effort all weekend, the guys played really hard but in the end they just have more skill than us,” Rybchinski stated.
The Jacks fell to 4-7-1 on the season. They will next play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Williston.
