The Bottineau girl’s 19U hockey team opened their season with a solid 3-1 win over the Sydney Rangers last Saturday in Bottineau.

“Our first game out we got a win, it was all right,” said Bottineau 19U Head Coach Matt Johnson. “But we didn’t play as well as I thought we would.”

Goaltender Jacie Ceglowski had a stellar day in net stopping 21-of-22 shots as Bottineau was out shot 22-16 by the Rangers.

“Our goalie played really well and she kept us in the game,” Johnson said. “I thought we did well in the defensive zone, but the only place we struggled was getting in our offensive zone.”

“We want to get more shots on the goalie than we did,” Johnson added.

When Ashley Blue got pucks to the net most of them went in.

Blue scored three unassisted goals in the contest to lead the charge by Bottineau.

Bottineau had five penalties to the Rangers one in the win.

Going forward Johnson thinks that the girls have a chance to be successful this season.

“We have got a good team, and our goal is to win our league, and I think we can do that,” Johnson said.

The schedule has changed for Bottineau this year as they will now have to play in a couple more jamborees this season than last. Johnson thinks that could be a bit of a challenge for the girls.

“It will be tougher for us, because we only have 10, 11 girls,” Johnson said. “Conditioning is going to be a factor for us.”

Bottineau will host Mandan High School at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. They will play at Crosby at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
