The Baymont Inn Classic in Wahpeton over the past weekend proved positive for the Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks.
The Jacks split games against Hibbing Community College and Northeast Community College. Despite losing to a tough Northeast team, Head Coach Wayne Johnson was pleased with the Ladyjacks effort.
“My first comment to our ladies after the game was ‘I know the scoreboard shows that we lost but it feels like we won the game,’” Johnson stated. “It was my expression of how pleased I was with our effort versus a very good Northeast program.”
The Sunday afternoon loss came 54-49, despite a solid three-point shooting effort from DCB.
The Ladyjacks were in it up until the end. The Jacks had a chance to tie with less than a minute left, but a miss left DCB just short.
“It was a real credit to the ladies to be in that position that late in the game,” Johnson stated. “This was a very good two-game weekend for us and a huge step in our development for the season.”
The Ladyjacks shot 32 percent from three to Northeast’s six percent.
Jordan Sondryl and Kayla Nelson each had 10 points. Sondrol also added six rebounds, four steals and a block.
Megan Green had eight points and six rebounds in the loss.
“Offensively we had our hands full against their excellent defensive pressure,” Johnson stated. “I was pleased with how we handled that for the most part. Good shots were difficult to get but we did take pretty good care of the basketball.”
The Ladyjacks weekend began with a solid 76-62 win over Hibbing Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Sondrol had a gigantic game, scoring 25 points, grabbing six boards and pick pocketing Hibbing four times.
Jackie Miller also had a solid game. The freshman had 20 points, six boards, three assists and a block.
The Ladyjacks shot 37 percent from three, hitting 15 times from beyond the arc.
“Thankfully the three ball was dropping for us today. We got off to a fast start with nine three’s in the first half,” Johnson stated. “We put up a pile of long range shots but that is something we expect to do regularly.”
Despite being outsized and out rebounded 47-31 the Jacks limited themselves to 15 turnovers, while forcing 22 in a big win.
“We had a bit more of a problem in the second half as their size and aggressiveness on the boards created some issues,” Johnson stated. “Overall it was a very good team win against a solid opponent.”
The split on the weekend has the Ladyjacks sitting at 3-3 on the season. They will host Trinity Bible College tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m. The
Ladyjacks will hit the road over the Thanksgiving weekend as they hit up the Dawson Classic on Friday and Saturday.
