It was another mixed bag over the past weekend for the Dakota College at Bottineau hockey team.

The Lumberjacks won one game against Minnesota opponents on a three-game road trip to the Gopher state.

First the weekend got to a solid start with a 10-4 win over St. John’s University JV in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Jacks out shot the Johnnies 49-40, and sophomore net minder Troy Chandler had 36 saves in the win.

After falling behind 1-0 as the Johnnies scored on a power play in the first, freshman Seth Serhienko notched his fifth goal of the season to even things at one apiece. Kirby Braybrook assisted.

Chad Miller would score a go-ahead goal with 5:32 in the first period. Will Kinsman assisted.

Serhienko would notch two power-play goals early in the second period to give the Jacks a 4-1 lead, and Serhienko a hat trick. Miller and freshman Nick Sutton assisted on the first marker. Jacob Plutowski was credited with the assist on the second.

A second Johnnie’s goal would reduce the deficit to two, but Chris Evans got the game-winner, as Sweden-born Robin Dainelsson dished the assist.
St. Johns would score twice more in the third period, but the Jacks would strike five times in the period to finish with a 10-4 win.

Cole Reisenauer, Jon Heidbrink, Patrick Martin, Braybrook and Scotty Walter would all score goals in the third.

Getting assists in the monster period for the Jacks were: Kinsman (2), Wade Haight (2), Walters (2), Heidbrink, Reisenhauer and Plutowski.

“We had a great game offensively and really played a good game to start the weekend,” stated Jacks Head Coach Travis Rybchinski. “We were hungry going to the net. It was good to see some pucks finally going into the net.”

Saturday the Johnnies got the upper hand early and never looked back. The Johnnies used two first period goals from Danny Heck and Zack Zoltan to open an early lead.

They never relinquished the lead using two additional third period goals to get a 4-0 win.

“We played hard but just could not find the back of the net,” Rybchinski stated. “We also took some lazy penalties that cost us by giving up two power play goals late in the game”

Johnnie’s goalie Adam Anderson had 40 saves in the shutout, while DCB goalie Troy Chandler had six saves in the first period until his skate broke.
He was replaced by sophomore goaltender Wylie Riendeau, who stopped 17-of-21 shots as his replacement.

The Jacks closed out the weekend with another loss on Sunday afternoon against Gustavus JV.

DCB again fell behind in the first period, allowing their fifth power play goal of the weekend.

Kinsman would score his first goal of the weekend to tie it at one in the second period. Sutton and Reisenauer assisted on the Jacks lone goal.

“I actually thought this was the best we have played this year,” Rybchinski stated. “We need to get more pucks and traffic to the nets. The other team capitalized on our mistakes and it ended up in the net. Hopefully we learn from the mistakes.”

Gustavus scored the game-winner with 44 seconds left in the second period. They put it away with two third-period goals; one was on the power play.

Troy Chandler saved 42-of-46 shots, while Gustavus goalie Miles Wilson stopped 31-of-32 Jacks shots.

The Jacks drop to 2-5-1 on the young season. They will host a two-game series with the University of Minnesota-Crookston’s club team beginning with a game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening, following with a day game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
