SOUTH HEART, N.D. - The Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau (W-N-B) softball team had to wait a few days longer than expected to open its 2015 season. Once it began, though, the Sioux were off and running.

W-N-B traveled to South Heart on Friday to take on West Region rival Heart River in a doubleheader. The Sioux rolled in both games of the twin bill, winning Game 1 by a 12-1 count before downing the Cougars 18-7 in the rematch.

Starting W-N-B pitcher Sam Colman had a productive opening game both in the circle and at bat. She struck out 13 Heart River batters in six innings, and she finished 2-for-3 at bat, drove in two Sioux runs and stole three bases. Lauren Mach and Sydney Arntzen both finished the game with one run batted in apiece.

Sophomore Hannah Tofteland hit the pitcher’s circle for the rematch and stuck out eight Cougars en route to her first career varsity win.

Arntzen had the hottest bat in Game 2 in hitting 3-for-5, including two doubles and as many RBIs. Mayce Brodehl (2-for-3) also ended the rematch with two RBIs, while Amber Hall finished with one RBI, a double and a triple.

W-N-B (1-0) was scheduled to play four games last week. A meeting on Tuesday against Stanley, another on Thursday at Kenmare/Mohall-Lansford Sherwood and another on Saturday at Dickinson were all called off.

The Sioux will visit Watford City today before trying again with Kenmareon Thursday in Mohall. W-N-B will then visit Central Lakes on Monday.
