The son of a pair of Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) sporting alumni may soon be making a name for himself in hockey.
Zach Nehring, 10, was recently selected by the Winnipeg Junior Jets AAA hockey team ahead of its games in the prestigious Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament in Edmonton, Alberta in July.
Nehring, the son of Kelly and Angie Nehring of Minot, is the only non-Canadian player to make the team. Several tryout sessions took place between last September and January. The Jets were allowed to keep three import players, but Nehring is the only one the team retained.
The team will begin practicing together this month before traveling to tournaments in Toronto, Minneapolis, Winnipeg and then the Brick Invitational in Edmonton.
Many current National Hockey League stars played in the Brick Invitational as youth players. NHL stars Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Dustin Byfuglien (Winnipeg Jets) played in previous editions of the tournament.
