The Northeast Regional Science Olympiad was held at Dakota College at Bottineau on March 26 with nine schools participating in the event.

The students at the junior high level came from Divide County, MLS (Mohall, Lansford and Sherwood) and Langdon, while senior high teams competing included Bottineau, Langdon, MLS, Rolla, Turtle Mountain Community High School and Williston.

It was a day of competition which included 15 events for both the junior high and senior high teams, which challenged the students in all the subject areas of the sciences.

The students also stayed busy in their competitions from being tested in their knowledge of anatomy and physiology; identifying fossils and discussing their classifications and ecology; testing bridges for structural efficiency that the students designed and built before the competitions and so much more.

The winners for the junior high competition included Langdon in first place, MLS in second and Divide County in third.

In the senior high competitions, Langdon placed first, MLS and Rolla placed second and Bottineau earned fourth place.

Angie Bartholomay, science instructor at DCB and one of the advisors for the competitions, stated that she was pleased with how the 2015 Science Olympiad competition went this year.

“The competitors learned science, engineering and mathematics in a fun way,” Bartholomay said. “And, I feel our regional helped prepare those that wanted to be competitive at the state competition.”

The top four teams from each region will go to state, which will take place at North Dakota State University on April 18.
