In recent weeks there has been talk in the community that Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) was having an issue in its business office with its books that have caused the college to place a spending freeze on its entire college. However, even though there is some truth about this issue, the college’s departments have not seen a freeze on its budgets and the college is seeing a successful academic year.

According to Dr. Ken Grosz, dean of Dakota College at Bottineau, at the beginning of school last fall, the business manager left DCB for a teaching job in another community.

After the business manager left the college, it was discovered that there was inconsistencies in the person’s book work which was called to Grosz’s attention.

“The accounting had some holes in it that we really needed to fine tune and get into shape,” said Grosz.

At that time, Grosz asked Jim Borkowski, long time business manager from DCB, who retired from the job a couple of years ago, to return and assist the new business manager, Laura Pfeifer, in figuring out the books and where the college was at with it finances.

Grosz also placed a spending freeze on certain items like purchasing equipment and certain trips taken by the college.

“As far as the normal routine of things to manage a school and do the instruction, those are as is,” Grosz said. “We know we are not going to have any financial disasters.”

Through Borkowski and Pfeifer’s work, they have made strides with the financial books.

“Jim and Laura are doing a good job and we are just about there. We are waiting to see where we are at.”
