For Hunter Schmidt and Tanner Lord they are hoping to spell “w-i-n-n-e-r” as they complete the 2015 North Dakota State Spelling Bee Competition which will take place this coming Monday in Bismarck at the Ramkota Hotel.
The two Bottineau students won at the county level and will now face-off against 96 other county winners from the state of North Dakota in hopes of walking away the winner of the event.
Making it to the top spot isn’t an easy task. All 98 of the contestants will have to take a written test, which from the top 25 spellers will advance to the finals.
Those who make it into the finals will compete in an oral spelldown until a champion is named.
The winner of the state spelling bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington from May 24-30.
The North Dakota Association of County Superintendents, the North Dakota Newspaper Association and the North Dakota Masonic Foundation will pay for the state champion’s expenses to Washington along with accompanying supervision.
The North Dakota Association of County Superintendents, in association with the North Dakota Newspaper Association and the North Dakota Masonic Foundation are also hosting the North Dakota’s state spelling bee.
