Already aware of where they’d be heading in the postseason, the Dakota College at Bottineau’s (DCB) men’s and women’s basketball teams wrapped up their regular season slates last week.
Both of DCB’s squads fell to Lake Region State (LRSC) on Thursday in the schools’ regular season finales. DCB’s women fell 66-59 to the Lady Royals in the night’s opening game before LRSC’s men’s team downed the Lumberjacks 90-82 in the later game.
DCB’s men (16-15) will visit United Tribes (UTTC) in the first round of the NJCAA Region XIII. The winner of the teams’ game in Bismarck tomorrow at 7 p.m. will travel to Michigan to face Gogebic in the Region XIII title game next month.
DCB’s women’s team (20-10) will host UTTC tomorrow at 7 p.m. in a Region XIII semifinal. Gogebic’s women’s team will also host a Region XIII final.
In DCB’s women’s game on Thursday against LRSC, the Ladyjacks’ guards Imani Scott and Chelsea Frazier were held to a combined 25 points.
“(LRSC) did a great job of containing Imani and Chelsea,” DCB head coach Wayne Johnson said. “Both girls worked hard and played well but Lake Region’s focus made it tough.”
Ladyjacks forward Mattie Schmitt had arguably one of her best games ofthe season against the Lady Royals. The freshman from Towner finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
DCB will be favored to defeat UTTC, however, in the teams’ Region XIII semifinal. The Ladyjacks swept the teams’ two-game regular-season set by a combined score of 190-129.
ROYALS DOWN LUMBERJACKS
DCB’s men’s team had a tough time early on Thursday against its counterparts from LRSC. The Royals controlled most of the first half and took a seemingly comfortable 47-31 lead into the break.
The Lumberjacks fought back after the interval, though, and won the second half 51-43. DCB sophomore forward Keouvion McCalop finished his final game at the Woodshed with a team-high 26 points.
Jacks head coach Brandon Colvin said he was pleased with his team’s Sophomore Night effort.
“The effort was there and I’m happy with that,” he said. “I told the guys after the game that, in our past few games before this, we’d fall behind and our heads would go down and that’d be it, but we fought back in this game and showed a lot of character.”
